Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) Tips and Events

Thursday, May 16, 2024, is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)! Because with roughly 1 in 6 people in the world and 1 in 4 in California are living with an impairment or disability, digital accessibility is essential for all websites and online content. This is why it is important to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital access/inclusion and people with different (dis)abilities.

From closed captions on videos to readable fonts and font colors, small changes can make a huge difference! Here are a few tips for ensuring online content is accessible:

  • Use high-contrast text and background colors for readability
  • Include alt text on photos and images
  • Organize web pages with headings and subheadings
  • Use unique names for links instead of URL

To explore UC accessibility standards for the web, visit the UCOP Electronic Accessibility webpage and check out this digital library of Siteimprove Tip Sheets. Aggies are welcome to join ucdavis.slack.com #accessibilityhelp and #accessibility for further accessibility discussions.
